Dave was paddling the Upper Wind River with four other well-known Northwest Class V paddlers.

The river was flooding, a solid class V level. Dave swam in the first large rapid (known as Initiation) and flush-drowned before he could be rescued. The extremely high flow severely hampered rescue efforts.
